  17. This memo describes the Finger user information protocol.  This is a
  18. simple protocol which provides an interface to a remote user
  19. information program.
  20.  
  21. Based on RFC 742, a description of the original Finger protocol, this
  22. memo attempts to clarify the expected communication between the two
  23. ends of a Finger connection.  It also tries not to invalidate the
  24. many existing implementations or add unnecessary restrictions to the
  25. original protocol definition.

  27. This edition corrects and clarifies RFC 1196.
  28.  
  29. This RFC specifies an IAB standards track protocol for the Internet
  30. community, and requests discussion and suggestions for improvements.
  31. Please refer to the current edition of the "IAB Official Protocol
  32. Standards" for the standardization state and status of this protocol.
